Overall Sexy! Four Ways to Style Overalls

Fashion is asking for a do-over in the form of overalls. If you were a kid or teenager in the 90s you might be thinking that you've seen this trend before, and you have - but on children or painters but this style has been updated to be edgier and even a little sexy.

Also known as a jumper, overalls are an alternative to pants and another excuse to keep wearing those crop tops and sheer tops that we all went crazy for last summer. But before you go dusting off your old pair, the 'new' overalls have a very specific fit you want to pay attention to. Here are the ways I would style it:

The Non- Denim Jumper

You don't have to go for a denim or jean jumper to pull this trend off. In fact, it is a lot easier to wear a non-denim jumper because it will fit better, and is easier to wear at night-time without much being done to it.

Here, the model has paired it with heels, a sheer blouse and a hat. Lose the hat if it isn't your style and button only one side for a more relaxed fit. Cuffing the pants above the ankles are a must to show off your heels and to edge the outfit up.

The Lady- Like Jumper

Class up this tomboy look by choosing a pair in a lightweight, neutral coloured material. A medium sized geometric print will add interest and is easily balanced with a similarly hued ultra feminine blouse.  This is also a good way to take advantage of the monochrome trend that is still going strong.

A lace collar, a peter pan collar or an embellished collar will look equally great underneath a similar jumpsuit. Complete the look with a large clutch or top handle satchel and heels.

The Denim Jumper

This is when fit matters the most. A medium wash that elongates your legs will make you look slimmer, and the less embellishments in the forms of buckles and buttons the more  streamlined you will look. Roll the cuff to show off your heels and pair with a fitted crop top or, if you're more conservative a fitted or sheer tee.

Stripes and Denim are a perfect match, so by all means do pair them together. An above the elbow striped shirt with a smaller stripe won't add bulk to your frame. Simple accessories are all you need to play into this more relaxed look. And as always, with the more casual styles of jumpers, roll the cuffs to edge it up and take it out of the painter man realm.

Tips

  • Make sure your pair of overalls/jumper fit you across the hips. The roomier it is the slouchier the look and thus the harder to pull off. A too-tight fit brings you into the category of call-girl which is also dangerous territory
  • The length of the overalls/jumper should stop right under your ankle bone if you want to roll them two/three times, which is the trendier (and more stylish) way to wear them. If you are not rolling them, they should hit you right at the top of your ankles so that when you stand they are not bungled up.
  • Embellishments are a no-go with this style. The simpler it is, the more flexible you can be with pairing them with other items in your wardrobe.
  • If you are choosing a patterned pair make sure to go for a neutral toned pattern with no more than three colours so you don't end up looking bulkier than you are
  • The top of the jumper/overalls should hit you above the curve of your breasts but below your collarbone
  • A pair of heels modernizes the look, elongates your legs and dresses it up far more than trainers would.

What do you think? Will you be wearing this trend anytime soon?

Till next time, lovelies

  1. I've always loved the jumper look. I had a jumper that was a skirt instead of a pants. I wonder if they will be bringing that back.
